Bequests have helped shape the character of Princeton since 1749, when a gift of five pounds was left to the recently founded college. Campus landmarks ranging from FitzRandolph Gateway to Frick Chemical Laboratory to Murray-Dodge Hall to Jadwin Gymnasium were all funded through bequests. So, too, were many of the scholarships and endowed professorships that are central to the intellectual vitality of the campus.
