Princeton's Manuel Llinás has been selected to receive a National Institutes of Health New Innovator Award, which provides early-career scientists with $1.5 million over a five-year period.

Llinás, an assistant professor of molecular biology and member of the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics, was among 29 scientists chosen for the award, which is being offered for the first time this year. He will use the funds to explore the metabolism of Plasmodium, the single-celled parasite that causes malaria.

Llinás earned a 1999 Ph.D. in molecular and cell biology from the University of California-Berkeley and did postdoctoral work in the lab of Joseph DeRisi at the University of California-San Francisco. He joined the Princeton faculty in 2005.
