Campus and Residential Life

The Princeton experience is shaped by a strong residential tradition that brings students together to live with, and learn from, one another, as well as by a wide array of extracurricular activities. Support is needed for a range of initiatives that will enhance the lives of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty and staff. These include completion of the new four-year residential college system, which will serve both undergraduates and graduate students; facilities and programming for varsity and recreational athletics; programs to promote health and well being; and support for student organizations and important volunteer service projects.

Student Life
Outdoor ActionPrinceton has a large and ever-growing array of student organizations that support personal, cultural, social, and professional development. These range from the Princeton University Band to Outdoor Action. All provide opportunities for students to expand their perspectives, develop interests, and meet new friends. Also vital to student life are centers dedicated to specific interests and concerns, including the Carl A. Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding, the Women’s Center, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Center. Other centers on campus offer support for students within a framework of spiritual and cultural traditions, helping to deepen self-understanding and communal ties. The Center for Jewish Life, for instance, provides services ranging from kosher dining options to learning opportunities for all Princetonians. All of these activities and centers are in need of funds to ensure that they can meet students’ evolving needs.

Student Service Initiatives
Student volunteers for Katrina reliefA significant number of student-led activities are dedicated to furthering Princeton's tradition of working "in the nation's service." More than 500 students participate in projects organized by the Student Volunteers Council (SVC), including Community Action, a pre-orientation program that has undertaken such projects as renovating homes, working in soup kitchens, and restoring city gardens. Others students work through Community House to help address the needs of local underserved children and families by participating in Big Brother/Big Sister programs, serving as tutors and mentors, and teaching healthy habits.

Varsity and Recreational Athletics
Varsity trackPrinceton’s athletes balance time on the playing field with time in the classroom, knowing that the two endeavors work together to build skills, habits, and qualities that will not only lead to academic and athletic success, but also serve them well throughout their lives. They are supported in this effort by coaches who place a strong emphasis on character development. To maintain the strength of this staff and ensure the ongoing success of varsity athletics, significant funding is needed to endow coaching positions in a variety of sports, and to continue to improve Princeton’s athletics facilities. Programmatic endowment funds serve the department and individual teams and are crucial for the program's long-term support. In addition to varsity athletes, hundreds of Princetonians participate in the University’s Club Sports program, which is overseen by the Department of Athletics. Funding is needed to endow these sports, and to improve the facilities used by these recreational athletes.
Health and Well-Being
Stephens Fitness CenterUniversity Health Services is dedicated to the development of a campus environment that enhances the physical, psychological, and emotional health of all members of the University community. It provides a comprehensive program of clinical, health promotion, and educational outreach services that are directed to vital issues in the lives of students, faculty, and staff, ranging from healthy nutrition, sexuality, and stress management to counseling for sexual assault, alcohol, and other substance abuse. Areas in need of support include mental health programs, medical and psychiatric services, health promotion and wellness services, and urgent medical care services.
