Sustaining and Strengthening the Princeton Experience

Inside FitzRandolph Gate flourishes a community of learners of every age and background, fired by the curiosity that has made Princeton a lasting source of groundbreaking discoveries. Today we must invest in the fundamental ingredients that make the University such an inspiring place to teach and learn.

Princeton has set a national standard for financial aid; we need to push even further to make sure we can admit and mentor the finest undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of their financial circumstances. We also need to support every element that helps to make the Princeton experience transformative, from our signature Freshman Seminars, to athletics—both varsity and recreational—to civic engagement. And we must enhance the life of the campus, strengthening and expanding our residential college system which does so much to help our students thrive.

Financial Aid
Students in classThrough financial aid, our campus community flourishes. Undergraduate scholarships ensure that Princeton can seek out and admit the very best students without regard to their financial circumstances and provide them with the support they need without requiring them to take out loans. The result is both an exceptional and diverse student body, and graduates who can make career choices without having to repay student loans. Graduate fellowships make it possible for the very best young scholars from around the world to pursue advanced degrees at Princeton. The University’s leadership role in financial aid is a point of pride for Princetonians and has inspired other institutions to expand their commitments. New resources are needed to sustain, and even strengthen, our financial aid program.

Teaching
Professor Carolyn RouseAs the smallest of the world’s great universities, Princeton combines the most advanced research with an unparalleled commitment to teaching, and fundamental to our teaching and our research is close academic collaboration between students and faculty. The University must continue to invest in its superb faculty and in special curricular opportunities that bring together small numbers of students with renowned scholars and teachers. Funds for professorships, preceptorships, and an array of key educational initiatives such as Freshman Seminars are needed to ensure that Princeton can continue to attract and retain the best scholars and teachers and engage them in ever-improving programs of teaching and learning.

Campus and Residential Life
Students at Opening ExercisesThe Princeton experience is also shaped by an exceptionally rich variety of extracurricular activities and a strong residential tradition that brings students together in a vibrant community of learning. Funds are needed for a range of initiatives that will enhance the lives of our undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff, including facilities to complete the new four-year residential college system that will serve both undergraduates and graduate students; facilities and programming for varsity and recreational athletics; programs to promote health and well-being; and initiatives that foster civic engagement among Princeton undergraduates, including student-run organizations and volunteer service projects.
