In 2008, Andrew Appel ’81 tampered with an electronic voting machine, changing 20 percent of the votes it had registered from one candidate to the other. His “crime”—court-ordered in his role as an expert witness in a New Jersey lawsuit—captured the attention of the media and voters. Politico called him “part of a diligent corps of so-called cyber-academics—professors who have spent the past decade serving their country by relentlessly hacking it,” in a story that focused on several Princeton computer scientists.
Princeton’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving resources is more than academic; over the last year the University has continued to create a campus climate that promotes sustainable practices—striving to make green initiatives as natural as wearing orange and black.
Inspired by the desire to help broaden boundaries for vision-impaired people, three Princeton University students created an armband device that allows a wearer without the ability to see to interpret color. The project emerged from a new class offered for the first time this spring, "Transformations in Engineering and the Arts," and lived up to the name of the course.
Alumni, friends, and members of the University community celebrated the new home of the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment on May 18. The center has an urgent goal: to help transition the world away from fossil fuels through research and education that will produce the solutions essential to preserving the planet for future generations. It was made possible by a $100 million gift from Gerhard Andlinger '52. The center's primary lecture and gathering space, Maeder Hall, made possible by a gift from Paul Maeder ’75, was also dedicated during the celebration.
In a unique effort to combine the expertise of university scientists and conservation organizations, Louis Bacon’s Moore Charitable Foundation has pledged $1.25 million to establish the Science-to-Action Fund at Princeton University. The fund will support environmental research that advances scientific understanding and practical, on-the-ground solutions in order to ensure the sustainable and rational use of freshwater for all.
When Princeton students have a big dream, they build it—together. Kirk Robinson ’17 and Ben Sorkin ’17 are engineering students who drive Princeton Racing Electric. These fast friends are leading a team to construct a race car from scratch, and they’re cheering each other on—all the way to the finish line.
Students, alumni, faculty, and University administrators gathered in October to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education, made possible by a gift from Dennis J. Keller ’63 and Constance Templeton Keller. The day included panels on entrepreneurship and innovation led by Keller Center visiting professors Derek Lidow '73 and Christopher Kuenne '85, and a keynote address by entrepreneur and educator Tom Leighton ’78.
In her EQuad laboratory, Lynn Loo is developing lightweight, easily processed, flexible, and often less expensive plastics to replace metals in electronic devices such as circuits and solar panels. At the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, she is advancing that work by forging partnerships with key companies. Loo, who earned her PhD in chemical engineering from Princeton in 2001, is the Theodora D. ’78 and William H. Walton III ’74 Professor in Engineering and a professor of chemical and biological engineering. She also serves as associate director for external partnerships at the Andlinger Center.
Professor of Electrical Engineering Sanjeev Kulkarni, director of the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education, has been on Princeton’s faculty since 1991. He received the University’s President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2007 and has earned seven Excellence in Teaching Awards from the Undergraduate Engineering Council. Kulkarni served as master of Butler College from 2004 until 2012. He was recently named dean of Princeton's Graduate School, effective March 31, 2014.
The Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment is working to transform the ways we generate and use electricity and fuels around the world. The center combines Princeton’s strengths in materials science, environmental science, policy, and engineering—and adds a measure of entrepreneurial creativity—to develop practical technologies and affordable products that can provide renewable energy and mitigate damage to the environment.
